What makes Humboldt Creamery’s organic milk a cut above the rest? One of our very simple core values: cows are meant to graze. This deceptively straightforward rule is what ensures our cows are eating ample amounts of grass, healthy, and producing great-tasting milk. For more than 85 years, Humboldt County has been an exceptional home to our cows, and it shows through in our organic milk production every single day.
A Difference You Can Taste
When we say “cows are meant to graze,” this is what we mean: cows are designed to eat grass, and they’re happiest and healthiest when they have ample opportunity to roam. Humboldt County is an ideal environment for pasture grazing, with a temperate climate and frequent fog that keeps everything lush and green year-round. Our cows get outdoor exercise as often as weather permits, wandering in spacious fields and enjoying temperatures that vary only about 12 degrees between winter and summer. They have the benefit of space as well – approximately one acre for every four cows, though they often choose to hang out in groups. Our pastures are carefully monitored and treated with organic fertilizers only when necessary to restore lost nutrients. The coastal soil here is naturally nutrient-rich and the grass is allowed to develop a long-root structure that dives deep into those nutrients. This results in the kind of rich, wholesome milk that many other organic milk brands can’t claim.
Our organic milk production comes from a long legacy of heritage and innovation, extending back into the 1800s when dairy farming first took hold in the area. Humboldt Creamery is based in Ferndale, an area that was known as “Cream City.” Home to innovations that revolutionized the dairy industry, including the first milk tanker truck, we are proud to carry on this rich heritage with our organic milk products.
Our USDA-certified and non-GMO-verified organic milk is always from pasture-raised cows that are never treated with antibiotics or the artificial growth hormone rBST*. We offer the standard organic milk options (whole, reduced fat, low fat, and fat free) as well as organic half & half, heavy cream, chocolate milk made with organic sugar and cocoa, and Coffeehouse Style milk. Everybody deserves real organic!
* No significant difference has been shown between milk from rBST-treated and non rBST-treated cows.
